Suddenly (God major in the suddenly’s when answering us
or speaking to us) two men dressed in white stood beside them. Why do you stand
here looking to the sky? It is almost if they want to say: “don’t stand here
all day, there is work to do”. Then
these men in white give the facts, the promise – this same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven – will come
back in the same way you have seen
him go into heaven. Although we did not see Jesus ascend, we can hold on to the
promise that He will come back.
Paul urges us to be ready for the coming of Christ. Jesus
will come when we least expect it. Hope you are ready?
It is also interesting
that Jerome (one of the early church fathers),
says: “It is a tradition of the Jews
that the Messiah will come at midnight, referring
to Egypt after the Pascha, and when the Destroyer came, and the Lord passed
over the dwellings. I think that this idea was kept alive in the apostolic
custom, that, on the day of vigils, at the Pascha, it was not allowed to
dismiss the people before midnight, since they expected the coming of Christ.”
It is also noteworthy how many of the gospel lessons on watchfulness are
associated with the night and a visit by night.
Jesus himself promised us: “Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me.”
